The Thanksgiving table set on Wednesday: tapers, peonies, green goblets and rust napkins on a pressed white cloth

The Table, Piece by Piece

Plates that match, tapers that do too, and linen ironed weeks ahead.

Set the table on Wednesday. Not on Thursday morning, not while the turkey rests, and never with guests standing around holding drinks and offering to help. On Wednesday night, with the house quiet, it takes an hour, and it’s one of my favorite of the week.

The tablecloth

White is easy, pressed, and long enough to fall well past the edge. If it’s too big for the ironing board, iron it on the table itself, over a folded blanket. Then nobody touches it.

The plates

One set, all matching, with a plate at every place. This is the day for your favorites. If you don’t have enough of a single set, mix coordinated ones around the table. You can also just lay out placemats and have the tables stacked in the kitchen if you're serving from there.

The glasses

Two - three at every place, one for water and two for wine (red & white or just a universal glass). Ours are green goblets for water and clear glasses for wine, which look lovely together by candlelight.

The napkins

Ironed, one on every plate. Rust this year: it looks warm by candlelight and forgives the cranberry sauce.

The silver

Polish it the weekend before, not on Wednesday. Put out every serving spoon you own; there are always more dishes than you think.

The candles

Tapers scattered (they are the most flattering form of candlelight). Lots of votives wedged in everywhere they fit. Unscented, so they don’t argue with the food. Light the votives at four, before you need them, and the tapers last minute so they don't melt down too quickly.

The serving dishes

Set out every serving dish on Monday and put a slip of paper in each one with the name of what goes in it: potatoes, stuffing, gravy, rolls. On Thursday anyone can help, because the dishes tell them what to do. (There are slips to cut out in the planner.)

Serving dishes with handwritten sticky notes: potatoes, turkey, stuffing, bread rolls
Each dish, with its name in it.

The place cards

Handwritten. It’s the one day of the year I make everyone sit where I tell them.

Set it on Wednesday, and Thursday is only about the food.

The table has been set since Wednesday.
